the versatility of gouache – skies / autumn weather / shadows / reflections / people / animals / buildings

Fridays 2.15pm – 4.45pm (2.5 hours with breaks)

This course is for novices or those with some experience in painting, but not necessarily in this subject, and will explore landscape views using a range of gouache techniques both transparent and opaque, and some mixed media.

We’ll explore wet into wet, light to dark, dark to light, layering methods, lifting paint off, glazing, masking, spattering, scratching and other exciting approaches.

We’ll look at a variety of paper / card supports, both white and coloured, and make reference particularly to the work of Mike Hernandez, Gordon Benningfield, Nathan Fowkes and Willis Heaton.

Most of the time we’ll use a range of photographic reference including, where appropriate, students’ own, but also, if weather allows and we have an Indian summer – attempt to do a little painting outside!
